To start with, let me say I’m a bit wary about writing anything to do with ‘Digital’.
The reason is simple: ‘Digital’ is perhaps the most over-used and sometimes even misused word in business circles in the last few years. There is no definitive meaning to it and it wildly changes with context.
In my career spanning two decades, ‘Going digital’ or ‘Digital Transformation’ has meant many things at different times. To start with, moving from ledgers to computers was a huge step for businesses. It was indeed a first big step. Then there was a lull. Dial-up internet in mid-nineties with un-stable connection and low speeds (coupled with lack of content) made the internet-embrace a tad hesitant. This changed with broadband at the turn of the millenium. High Bandwidths at tolerable prices started driving new businesses like Medical Transcription. Dedicated international pipes drove the outsourcing business from US and Europe to India. These were definitely digital transformations that triggered a business revolution that employed people in millions, directly and in-directly.
Nevertheless, Digital Transformation by itself, in many emerging markets, has been lopsided and hasn’t touched many industries. For instance many businesses (including big global ones) have not completely digitized their business processes. Notwithstanding huge ERP and BPM implementations, many critical processes are still managed on Excel sheets. Many of these corporations still use plain Excel sheets to manage critical processes like Performance Management of resources (man and machine), Vendor Management, Maintenance Management, Facility Management, Asset Management, Payment Management, and many more! The benefits of Smart devices and improved connectivity infrastructure like 4G/5G have not been utilized.
Advantages of Digitizing Processes & Work-flows are obvious and some of them are : Efficient Data Management, Promotes Active Collaboration, Reduces Costs, Removes Pilferage, Improves Customer Experience, Improves Productivity, Better Customer Insights and most important of all Increased Agility helps business stay relevant in an ever-changing business environment.
So, if there are so many advantages why is there hesitancy for managements to Go Digital?
Some of the below may be the reasons of the hesitancy:
Complexity of getting the job done – Managements fear that they may embark upon something whose complexity they cannot handle
Costs – There may be an apprehension that undefined costs may spiral out of control
Legacy systems – One of the biggest reasons of inertia in Digital transformation is the attachment with existing systems of management. Also, investments already committed into legacy systems
Fear to Transform – Change may be perceived as risky & inconvenient and hence the fear to embark on the same. However the implications of not embracing change when necessary has proven too costly for businesses.
IT vision – Just like other things, IT needs vision. There is no dearth of CIOs with vision, however their boards need to back them.
